Many conservative commentators have delighted in the fact that President Bush is the first president since 1988 to win more than 50 percent of the vote, thus confirming his mandate. That, however, is simply a statistical fact that if there are only two nationwide candidates, the winner will have more than 50 percent of the votes cast. Duh! Moreover a 2 percent margin is statistically more akin to a squeaker, not exactly a mandate.
