Kansas forward Wayne Simien will be out four to six weeks after undergoing surgery on his left thumb Monday.
The preseason All-American was injured Saturday in the No. 2 Jayhawks’ 64-60 victory over South Carolina. X-rays revealed the thumb on his non-shooting hand was severely sprained. Further testing showed ligament damage.
The 6-foot-9-inch senior has had an injury-marred career at Kansas. He missed 28 games for various injuries over his first three seasons.
Kansas (7-0) plays Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Wednesday in Kansas City’s Kemper Arena.
In other injury news, Louisville learned that forward Otis George will miss two to four weeks after aggravating a stress fracture in his right foot.
Settlement reached
Relatives of an Oklahoma State basketball player killed in a university plane crash in 2001 were awarded a $1.6 million settlement, a newspaper reported Monday.
The settlement to the family of Daniel Lawson Jr. was split between Lawson’s parents, son and attorneys, the Oklahoman reported Monday.
Lawson, a 21-year-old junior guard, was one of 10 men who died Jan. 27, 2001, when an airplane carrying members of the basketball program crashed in a Colorado field on the way back from a basketball game at the University of Colorado.
Cotton boosts Detroit
Detroit, which was just 2-6 entering Monday night’s game with Eastern Michigan, got 27 points from sophomore guard Brandon Cotton as the host Titans earned an 88-83 victory.
Cotton, a McDonald’s All-American who transferred from Michigan State after playing in just three games last season, made his debut for the Titans. He made 12 of his 17 field-goal attempts, including three in the final five minutes.

Freshman Roy Bright had career-high 17 pts, 11 rebs as Bearcats (8-0) gave coach Bob Huggins his 550th career win. Eric Hicks’ 18 pts led Cincinnati, which opened with 14-0 run.
