A recent story reported that a cat lover spent $50,000 to genetically clone her deceased cat to create a duplicate (“Pet owner pays $50,000 for cat clone,” News, Dec. 23).
An enlightened cat advocate would realize that millions of homeless felines have the potential to be invaluable pets. Additionally, the $50,000 would be more beneficial if donated to shelters and sanctuaries that have neglected and abandoned felines readily available as loyal, companion animals. The expensive genetic cloning of deceased cats is unsettling because it jeopardizes the hapless plight of adoptable felines that merit an opportunity to be priceless members of a household.
