Satchel Paige was 59 years old when he pitched for Kansas City on Sept.25, 1965. (Minnie Minoso was 57 when he played for the White Sox in 1980). The NL record is held by Jim O’Rourke, who was 52 when he caught for the New York Giants on Sept. 22, 1904.
2. Football
George Blanda was 48 when he played his final game in Oakland in 1975 to complete his 26-year NFL career.
3. Basketball
Forward Nat Hickey was 46 when he played for the NBA franchise in Providence in 1947-48. In more recent times, Robert Parish was 43 when he finished his career with the Bulls in the 1996-97 season.
4. Hockey
At the age of 51, NHL legend Gordie Howe played 80 games for the Hartford Whalers in 1979-80 and scored 15 goals.
5. Boxing
When Archie Moore fought Muhammad Ali in 1962, he allegedly was 49 (many suspected he was older).
6. Tennis
Martina Navratilova is 48 and still competing as a doubles player (she’s in the Australian Open).
7. Horse racing
Bill Shoemaker was 54 when he won the 1986 Kentucky Derby aboard Ferdinand and 58 when he retired to become a trainer in 1990.
