As always, at this time of year we’re seeing orange.
Clementines, Dancy, satsumas and tangelos crowd the corners of the produce aisles. They all belong to a family of citrus fruit that falls under the mandarin heading, and though they vary somewhat in size and number of seeds, mandarins share the characteristics of being easy to peel and far less acidic–not to mention portable–than an orange.
– Clementines are seedless and have a honeyed flavor.
– Tangelos (right) are a cross between an orange, grapefruit and tangerine.
– The satsuma is a Japanese variety of tangerine with a reddish cast.
– Regular tangerines have a robust but sweet orange-ish flavor.
