No Cross to bear

Marcia Cross un-outed herself Wednesday. She’s not gay, she said.

Newspaper and tabloid predictions that the “Desperate Housewives” star would reveal that she’s a lesbian in an exclusive with The Advocate managed to whip up a national frenzy: Is she or isn’t she?

On “The View” on Wednesday, Barbara Walters asked her straight out: Are you gay?

“This is what comes of being 42 and single,” said Marcia, looking about as uncomfortable as her character Bree Van De Kamp would be about a ring on her coffee table. “I don’t know if they just needed to find a reason why I wasn’t married. … I’m not gay.”

“View” co-host Joy Behar jumped in, “So tonight is off between us?”

The Advocate also denied that Marcia had any plans to come out in the national gay and lesbian magazine. “I have absolutely no idea where the story came from,” spokesman Eric Chandler told the Atlanta Journal Constitution. “But the phones have been ringing off the hook.”

The mag’s Web site also published a statement from Marcia’s rep saying the rumors are “completely untrue. She is, however, very supportive of the gay and lesbian community.”

Now that that’s settled, Marcia can kick back with her co-stars and celebrate their bigger paychecks. Each of the four main “Housewives”–Marcia, Teri Hatcher, Eva Longoria and Felicity Huffman–will get a $250,000 bonus, according to USA Today.

Nicollete Sheridan, Teri’s trampy rival, and resident hunk James Denton will get smaller pay hikes.
