Roland J. Nelson, age 77 years, of Fishers, formerly of South Holland/Riverdale, IL. He was born June 20, 1927 in Riverdale, IL to Julius and Mabel Ulander Nelson who have preceded him in death. Roland graduated from Thornton High School in Harvey, IL in 1946 and then from Valparaiso University in 1951. Mr. Nelson served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He married Dorris M. Appelgren May 1, 1954 in Chicago, IL whom he met while working as an accountant in the Product Service Division of A.O. Smith Corp. in Chicago for 37 years, retiring in 1987. He was very active through the years in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Dolton, IL, where he was a lifelong member, and the last four years at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Indianapolis. Mr. Nelson served on various church, school and nursing home boards, and after his retirement was a driver for the Cancer Society, transporting patients to their appointments. He also was an income tax preparer for seniors through the A.A.R.P. His greatest pleasure was umpiring Little League games for 25 years. Visitation will be held Sunday, February 13 from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Fishers-Castleton Chapel, 9900 Allisonville Road with funeral services Monday, February 14 at 1 p.m. (E.S.T.) at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 8115 Oaklandon Rd. with visitation from 12 p.m. until service time. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Doris M. Nelson; daughters, Lynn (James) Conlin, Debbie (John) Davis; son, David (Elizabeth Cardenas) Nelson; grandchildren, Dana, Julie and Tracy Conlin, Kristina and Steven Davis. He was preceded in death by sister, Minette Klein. Memorial contributions may be made to Parkinson’s Foundation and/or Holy Cross Lutheran Music Ministry.
