Being frugal about matters of grooming, I tend to use hairstylists–or, more generically, hair shorteners–who work in places that have something like “econo” or “cheap” in the name. But when I want a haircut that takes at least as long as an oil change, I break down and pull out the big bucks, say, $20 or $30.
On the last such occasion, my young stylist had just finished the shampoo and started in with the scissors, when I noticed she had a fierce case of the shakes. I thought, “I’m paying extra for this? Thank God I didn’t request the shave.”
She asked if I minded whether she excused herself. I wasn’t going to say, “No, I insist that you stand right here and shake those razorlike scissors as close to my skull as possible.”
While she was gone, I could see the other stylists stealing glances at me, as though I had done something very wrong–released lice into the salon or told an off-color joke.
She returned after about five century-like minutes and said, “Sorry, I haven’t had anything but coffee since breakfast. I had to go drink some water.” I thought it best to talk her down and asked about her favorite places to travel, where she was born–had she considered a better diet?
It worked. I got a great cut. And I’ll go back. But in the meantime, does anybody know where to find Econo-Yoga Cuts?
