Two Elgin residents were robbed of cash and a cellular telephone despite their attempts to fend off four masked men who threatened them with a plastic gun, according to police reports.
Police said a 22-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were walking to their car near South and Jackson Streets around 11:45 p.m. Monday when they were accosted by four young men who wore masks and demanded money.
The man told police he thought the weapon was plastic and began resisting. One of the suspects hit him in the face with the gun and broke it, authorities said. The woman also began struggling, and the suspects fled when one of the robbers lost his mask.
The man told police that his wallet containing $650 in cash was stolen during the attack, and the woman said the suspects took a cell phone she had been holding.
