Kevin Brown’s back is hurting again, just as the season is about to begin. Brown, 39, left his last spring outing after three innings and could miss his first start. He gave up four runs and six hits as the Yankees lost 4-3 to the Tigers. “I thought I’d get out of there before I had a chance to do any real damage,” Brown said.

Tike Redman was moved into the No. 3 spot in the Pirates’ batting order, a surprise adjustment by manager Lloyd McLendon. “Tike can hit,” McClendon said. Last season’s NL Rookie of the Year Jason Bay was expected to bat third but will hit fourth after missing most of the spring schedule with a bruised wrist.

Curt Schilling was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Red Sox, a move that was expected as he works his way back from off-season ankle surgery. Schilling is tentatively scheduled to start against the Yankees on April 13 at Fenway Park. “He should only miss about 10 days of the season,” manager Terry Francona said.
