The Village Board this week approved a land swap that would give the Fire Protection District a building site on a major roadway and residents additional open space.
Village Administrator Jerry Ducay said the village exchanged two village-owned lots in the Lakeview subdivision for two other lots being purchased by the fire district. He called the swap a “win-win situation.”
The village lots provide an ideal location for a fourth fire station because fire vehicles called to an emergency will be able to pull out directly on to 80th Avenue without cutting through residential streets, according to Trustee Jim Holland.
People who live in the Lakeview subdivision will have more open space leading to a “parklike” area bordering a pond, he said.
Fire Protection District Chief James Grady said the district plans to build on the site between 2008 and 2010. Grady said he thinks the building can be constructed without a tax increase proposal.
The fire district has three stations and covers 50 square miles.
