This is regarding “Study: Most college instructors liberal” (News, March 30). The story quotes Jonathan Knight, director of academic freedom and tenure for the American Association of University Professors, as saying, “It’s hard to see that these liberal views cut very deeply into the education of students.”
This is, by any standard, a ludicrous statement.
It would be absurd to believe that the personal biases held by those who teach do not find their way into the curriculum and course materials provided, not to mention whatever commentary faculty might make concerning explanation of such materials. This is certainly true of all faculty, whether they are liberal or conservative.
The liberal tenet, that diversity of students on campus enriches all students’ learning and living experiences, must be as true of the teaching establishment as it is of the student population. Those of the liberal persuasion who argue differently are either poorly informed or employing a double standard. In either case, they are wrong.
