Ages ago it was customary for the eldest son to receive all of his father’s inheritance. Families were encouraged to send their eldest son into the priesthood–and his inheritance went into the church coffers.

The reason priests can’t marry and women can’t be ordained is that a married man couldn’t turn that inheritance over to the church and a woman couldn’t own property.

The Catholic Church once advocated the enslavement of non-Christians, but thankfully abandoned that policy.

It can and should evolve with the times.
