After seven months without a police chief, officials in West Chicago are drawing closer to hiring one now that the municipal election has passed.
The home-rule city has been without a police chief since Gerald Mourning resigned to become police chief of Arlington Heights.
“We are right on track,” said West Chicago Mayor Michael Fortner. “I’m hoping to bring a candidate to the new council after they are seated in May.”
Because the police chief is filled by mayoral appointment, city officials said attorneys advised them not to hire a new chief until after last week’s election.
Fortner ran unopposed Tuesday.
His choice is subject to approval by a majority of the aldermen, officials said.
