From all news reports, the new pope, Pope Benedict XVI, will continue the policies of the deceased Pope John Paul II.

This is regrettable.

For the large majority of people the pope represents, the major problems faced are poverty, overpopulation and AIDS caused largely by ignorance of basic methods of family planning.

I believe to the extent the Catholic Church ignores these problems through its papal spokesman, the church will continue to fail those most dependent on them for moral guidance.
