The results of the recent papal conclave show that Pope Benedict XVI is an interim pope who has been charged with trying to transition the Catholic Church out of its current perilous state and into something more spiritually viable. That’s doubtful given his history but a wish nonetheless. His election presents a great opportunity but could also have the makings of an ideological purge that would just aggravate the problems the church now has. It is hoped that he would show more moderation than he has in the past, take a slow but steady approach to the most serious problems and leave the next pope with a lot more to build on than he was left with.
