Two people were seriously injured Sunday when a semitruck tanker carrying liquid oxygen on Interstate 80 in Lake County, Ind., smashed into a car, police said.

The accident occurred near the interchange of Interstate 80 and Interstate 65 about 4:20 a.m. when the westbound tanker hit the 2000 Dodge Neon, according to an Indiana State Police news release.

Ramon Lazano III, 21, of Hammond and Christine Wojtowicz, 22, of Hebron, Ind.,were both taken to Northlake Methodist Hospital in Gary, the release said. Lazano, the Neon driver, and Wojtowicz suffered head trauma and internal injuries. Both were in serious condition.

Earl Wantland, 60, of LaPorte, Ind., was treated for a cut, according to the release. After hitting the truck, the car struck the median. The tanker separated from the semitruck, landing on its side in the eastbound left lane.
