A Chicago man who allegedly fatally shot a man at a barbecue over the weekend was ordered held in lieu of $1 million bail Tuesday.
Lavell Smith, 20, of the 1200 block of North Kildare Avenue, was charged with first-degree murder in the death Sunday of Horace Swanigan, prosecutors said.
Smith was involved in a fight with Swanigan at a barbecue in the 4000 block of West Hirsch Street, said Cook County Assistant State’s Atty. Theresa Smith. Swanigan allegedly displayed a gun that was then snatched away by Smith after a brief skirmish.
The two continued fighting and Smith shot Swanigan, prosecutors said.
Smith’s next court date is June 21.
