This is regarding “The unfashionable boys of summer” (Commentary, June 1), by Dick Meister. Though I agree with him, he did not go quite far enough. As for “softball night in an over-50 corporate league,” what about the sad state of the players’ pants? What is it with the long pants of their uniforms breaking over their shoes? That is so softball.
And while I do credit those few independent souls who wear their uniform pants hiked up to mid-calf, whatever happened to the traditional stirrup socks? Joe DiMaggio didn’t wear his pants like pajamas. Ted Williams didn’t wear solid-color socks with no white showing. No they wore stirrup socks like they were supposed to.
I did see a couple of pitchers, the Cubs’ Mark Prior and the young White Sox pitcher Brandon McCarthy, actually wearing stirrup socks recently. My heart soared.
