Travel wallets can be so nerdy.

But also necessary, especially for highly excitable students on maiden voyages overseas this summer.

There’s likely to be even more of them than usual. The Travel Industry Association of America reports 16 percent of summer travelers plan to go overseas in 2005, compared with 14 percent in 2004. (That, by the way, was a record-breaking year, when international tourist arrivals shot up 10 percent, totaling 760 million across the globe, according to the World Tourism Organization.)

Budget Living’s June/July issue found a few wallets that patrol IDs and documents without crossing the border to geeky–unless they’re being cheeky about it.

– Air Mail TravelFolio, $28. Whimsically modeled on a par avion envelope, Mi & Ai’s vinyl cover offers pockets for passport, ID, boarding pass and itinerary.www.miandai.com

– Document Case, $15. This RipStop nylon number might teeter on the geek brink, but the uber-organized will find its 13 pockets and pen loop handy for quarantining receipts and itineraries and scrawling first impressions of the sights. www.containerstore.com

– Travel Wallet, $36. This chem-class-themed wallet covers every element colorfully, with clear interior pockets, a Velcro seal and looks that Budget Living declared pure “Au.” (That’s periodic-table-speak for gold.) www.girlshop.com

– Ticket Wallet, $48 (not shown). For uptown girls, Lodis’ leather wallet with folding compartments can safely tuck in hotel keys and credit cards too. www.whatshebuys.com
