This is regarding “Access to birders’ paradise restricted; Terrorism concerns almost put four islands along the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel off-limits; Instead, enthusiasts must pay” (News, June 22).

The story states that “The rules that go into effect July 1 require bird-watchers to give advance notice of visits . . . and pay $50 an hour for a security escort.”

This is small example of our society being transformed by our fears in a post-Sept. 11, 2001, world.

To think that Americans require “minders” in a free society is a sad thing.

We are winning the war in Afghanistan against Osama bin Laden.

But we are losing the war on our own shores with restrictions to liberty such as these.
