Retired Michigan golf enthusiasts Jim and Pat Healey are trying to play 18-hole rounds in each of the 50 states, the 10 Canadian provinces and Washington, D.C., during a 61-day period. Their “CanAmAthon,” as they have dubbed it, started Saturday when they flew to Alaska and teed off at the Anchorage Golf Course. That night, they hopped a flight to play in Evanston, Wyo., on Sunday. They were to play Tuesday in Mansfield, Ohio. The couple spent six months planning their golf odyssey and figure that it will take them 20,000 miles by air and another 9,000 miles by car. Their last three rounds are scheduled to be on Oct. 17-19 in Tennessee, Kentucky and then Hawaii. Jim Healey, 74, said it all started one night when he was having trouble sleeping. Instead of counting sheep, he started counting all the golf courses he’d played. “I got around to counting how many states I’d played in, and it was 28,” he said. “I thought, that’s not very many.” Their Web site dedicated to the journey: www.handi.com/JimPatCanAmAthonAP
