If they build it, you will come. But will they let you in? That is the question for the VIPs queuing up outside Streeterville’s swanky Lucky Strike Lanes at a preview party to benefit the Fairygodmother Foundation, which grants wishes to adults facing terminal illnesses. “This is not your daddy’s bowling alley,” agreed Bill Scheidhauer, a native Chicagoan and partner in Lucky Strike. This is a bowling lounge, complete with a DJ booth, wine bar, five fireplaces, 22 plasma screens, 11 billiard tables, the requisite lanes (18) and a 13-point dress code that forbids among other things “sweats, athletic wear, excessive baggy clothing and lingerie.” Will the blond in the gauzy skirt hanging on her hipbones make the cut? Or the guy in the baggy shirt and shorts? Allen Barbour had the foresight to wear a dress shirt and slacks for bowling. “You have to get used to the lights,” Barbour said of the neon lining the gutters. Scheidhauer plans two more lounges for the area. If he wants to strike it nouveau riche, he may want to drop the dress code.
