After winning the championship flight at the 37th Crete-Monee Pow-Wow on Saturday, Wheaton Warrenville South’s Jon Popejoy had an explanation why this season is turning out to be so much better than his last.
“I’ve learned not to train myself into the ground,” said Popejoy, whose time of 14 minutes 53.9 seconds broke the 3-mile course record for his third major victory of the season. “I’m watching everything, I’m being very conservative and I’m running the best I ever have.”
Last season he was troubled by mononucleosis. This race he was troubled by little. He shared the early lead with Palatine’s Steve Finley and Lincoln-Way Central’s Mark Battista, then pulled away in the last half-mile.
Finley, who finished second, helped Palatine take the team title.
