When I was growing up my mother always said, “Look both ways before you cross the street.” While a positive step, the current city proposal to crack down on jaywalkers addresses only half of the problem of car-pedestrian interaction. Drivers’ failure to yield to pedestrians on turns is a routine hazard to those walking downtown. Vehicles running red lights or blocking crosswalks represent adhazards to pedestrians. Before the city further emboldens aggressive drivers with a new crackdown on jaywalking, it needs to look both ways and also enforce the laws it currently has on the books to protect law-abiding pedestrians from law-breaking motorists.
