Jenny Connell, associate director of admissions at the University of Chicago, will offer tips and perspective at a discussion titled “Applying to College? Insider’s Advice on Writing a Successful Essay” 6:15 p.m. Thursday at the Victory Gardens Theater, 2257 N. Lincoln Ave. It’s a promotional tie-in with the show “The Memory House.” . . . On Broadway, John Treacy Egan will become the newest Max Bialystock in “The Producers,” beginning Oct. 25. And on Nov. 1, Jai Rodriguez of “Queer Eye For The Straight Guy” steps into the role of Carmen Ghia. . . . The not-for-profit Des Plaines Theater Preservation Society–which works to save, restore and renovate the vaudeville-era movie theater at 1476 Miner St. in downtown Des Plaines–celebrates the theater’s 80th birthday this weekend with a festival of classic movies and live entertainment through Sunday. . . . Micah McCain, whose drag persona Bridgett of Madison County is well known on the West Coast, is bringing his latest one-man show “Unshaven!” to Chicago. Billed as a “deconstruction of good drag gone bad,” “Unshaven” will play Nov. 2-13 at the Bailiwick Arts Center. . . . “Beyond Glory” at the Goodman Theatre now runs through Oct. 16. . . . The Neo-Futurists have announced their first holiday show: “The Santa Abductions,” written by ensemble member Sean Benjamin. It opens 8 p.m. Nov. 12 at The Neo-Futurarium, 5153 N. Ashland Ave. . . . Steppenwolf ensemble member Austin Pendleton has adapted the Shakespeare plays “Henry VI” (both parts) “Richard III” into a new work titled “H6R3.” The shows–to be read in New York this weekend–also suggest a new ending. . . . “Neutrino Project: The Instant Movie,” has been extended through Oct. 28 at the Improv Kitchen, 3419 N. Clark St.
