The Illinois state fire marshal resigned Friday from the administration of Gov. Rod Blagojevich for personal reasons, officials said Friday.

J.T. Somer was appointed in April 2004 after more than 30 years of experience with the Salem Fire Protection District, including seven years as chief.

Pending a permanent replacement, Dave A. DeFraties, the agency’s chief of staff and a retired veteran of the Springfield Fire Department, will assume day-to-day oversight of the agency.

“J.T. Somer made this decision for personal reasons to explore other opportunities,” said Rebecca Rausch, spokeswoman for Blagojevich.
