I am amazed by the nomination of Harriet Miers as Supreme Court justice. In his announcement, George W. Bush said he looked at hundreds of qualified Americans from “all walks of life.” What does “all walks of life” mean? Did he look at any judges? Did he look for anyone with experience? Did he look for anyone with leadership ability? Yes, Harriet Miers is a lawyer. Yes, she has management experience as head of the Texas Lottery Commission. Yes, she is a friend of the president.
But I wonder whether these are truly qualifications for a member of the top court of our nation.
What did Bush say of Mike Brown’s qualifications when he made Brown head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency?
