The average nationwide pump price for regular-grade gasoline fell 8 cents, to $2.848 a gallon, over the past week, the Energy Department said Tuesday. It was the first decline in four weeks.
The average in the week ended Monday was up 85.5 cents, or 43 percent, from a year ago, the department said.
Nationwide, the average diesel price increased 0.6 cent, to a record $3.15 a gallon. It was the second straight weekly record and fourth consecutive increase in diesel prices.
The government’s gasoline price report is based on a survey of about 1,200 filling stations in all 50 states.
