Imagine that you lurk in the darkest dark of the ocean, with 3,000 feet of water above you.
You mind your own business.
Suddenly a strobe light flashes in your well-developed, foot-wide eyes, flashes every 30 seconds to generate hundreds of pictures of you. You lash out, blinded (and probably hungry), grasp the shrimp lure, struggle and fight for four hours to extricate yourself from the hook–even severing your own 20-foot arm.
The science “experts” are surprised to find you aren’t lethargic but “one vicious hulk.”
This is apparently what happened when two Japanese scientists hunted down and found a giant squid (News, Sept. 29).
I confess I was riveted by the picture.
But then I was saddened by the story.
