It will be nice to finally get down to some baseball Saturday night. This week we have learned that there are lots of Sox fans that go to bars and get weepy when they’re drunk. We’ve also been reminded of the fact there’s a lot lacking when it comes to colorful Sox postseason history. And perhaps, most frighteningly of all, we have learned that Dennis DeYoung is the highest-ranking White Sox celebrity fan. That’s just not right. The Cubs have Billy Corgan. At least he’s still making music.
During some hard-core TV investigative reporting, we discovered that “Don’t Stop Believin'” by ’70s hair rockers, Journey, is the team’s unofficial fight song. A.J. Pierzynski says it started out as a joke, but it’s not turning out that way. Or maybe it is. I’m not sure I can even keep track anymore. With the lack of an opponent to report on and only two workouts this week, “Don’t Stop Believin'” is a huge Sox story.
Journey recently sang the very same song during the 7th-inning stretch at Wrigley Field. This would seemingly disqualify it in terms of Sox team-song eligibility. But there’s a loophole: The band’s lead singer, Steve Perry was not at Wrigley. It was a sound-alike. Perry was kicked out of his own band, Journey. So technically, the song is still eligible, if it’s the original version performed with Steve Perry. If you’re keeping score at home, DeYoung also was kicked out of his own band, Styx.
It’s a stupid song that Sox players heard when they were out drinking after a game, and they started singing it as a joke. Then they started requesting it. As a joke, A.J. played it in the clubhouse. The next thing you know they’re singing it on the team plane on the way home from Anaheim, and Steve Perry is invited to the World Series. That’s when Dennis DeYoung went crazy. I can see his point. At least he’s from Chicago. “Babe,” however, doesn’t seem like an appropriate theme song for a baseball team. Can’t we just stick with “Back In Black” by AC/DC?
