In a third attempt to tighten its vicious dog ordinance, village officials this week unanimously voted to add a jail-time provision to the law.
In the revision, owners of dogs deemed vicious face misdemeanor charges with a penalty of 2 to 30 days in jail if it is shown that the owner failed to maintain or keep the dogs enclosed or failed to spay or neuter the dogs before an unprovoked dog attack.
“[Owners] will be jailed for their carelessness,” Mayor Roger Claar said.
In recent weeks, Bolingbrook officials have stiffened other aspects of the ordinance.
Trustees increased the fine for such pet owners to $250 for the first offense with incremental increases to $500, $750 and $1,000 for repeat offenders.
The village also amended the definition of vicious
The previous ordinance gave dogs three chances before they could be deemed vicious. If found to be vicious, the dogs must be confined by the owners.
