Exhibit A: Peter Jackson’s $207 million, three-hour remake of “King Kong.”
Over the weekend, “Kong” made $50.1 million, at least $10 million less than box-office analysts expected. Since its debut Wednesday, it has made $66.2 million.
“Brokeback Mountain,” on the other hand, stampeded into the top 10, earning $2.4 million from just 69 theaters, an average of $34,200 per theater.
Overall, the top 12 films earned $121.2 million, up 22 percent from last year, giving Hollywood some much-needed good news heading into the year’s home stretch.
