Southern Illinois assistant men’s coach Shane Hawkins, indicted as part of a federal investigation into a Kansas community college’s athletic program where he used to work, resigned Monday.
Hawkins, 29, had been on a paid leave of absence since Oct. 20, a day after being accused of making a false statement before a federal grand jury investigating athletic improprieties at Barton County Community College in Great Bend, Kan. Hawkins was a Barton County assistant from 1999 to 2001.
In 2002, then Salukis head coach Bruce Weber, now at Illinois, asked Hawkins to return to his alma mater as a graduate assistant. He was promoted to full-time assistant in the summer of 2004 by current head coach Chris Lowery.
In his resignation letter, Hawkins wrote that his decision to leave SIU “was difficult, but it will allow me to focus on personal matters that require my attention at this time.”
Illini’s Randle iffy
Illinois, which climbed to No. 6 in this week’s AP poll, may be without forward Brian Randle for its game with Missouri Wednesday. Randle missed the last game with a sprained ankle . . . .Maryland coach Gary Williams got a new contract that could keep him at his alma mater for the next eight years.
