Several people have added their names to the list of candidates for Illinois House and Senate races throughout the Chicago area.

Among those filing nominating petitions by Monday’s deadline was Rob Sherman of Buffalo Grove, a well-known atheist and Constitutional activist. Sherman triggered a March Democratic primary race with Michael MacDonald, also of Buffalo Grove, in the northwest suburbs’ 53rd House District.

Three Republicans–current state Rep. Sidney Mathias, former Libertarian Scott Bludorn and Prospect Heights Ald. Patrick Ludvigsen–already are in a GOP primary in the district.

In the northwest suburbs’ 27th Senate District, being vacated by Sen. Wendell Jones of Palatine, Peter Gutzmer of Hoffman Estates filed as a Democrat.

Harper College Trustee Matt Murphy and Palatine Mayor Rita Mullins are vying for the Republican nomination.

In the 33rd Senate District, Sen. Cheryl Axley of Mt. Prospect has no Republican opponents. But James J. Morici of Park Ridge, an attorney and former prosecutor, on Monday joined gun-control activist Dan Kotowski in the Democratic primary.

In Chicago’s 21st House District, Republican Charles “Charlie” Johnson of Chicago filed to oppose Rep. Robert Molaro, a Democrat.
