If I could give anyone any gift this holiday season, I would give my family the gift of togetherness.

My parents are divorced, and my dad lives halfway across the country with most of my siblings. Therefore I only get to see them a few times a year.

My extended family on my mom’s side doesn’t live nearby, so I don’t get to see them very often either.

My siblings and I haven’t even met most of our family on our dad’s side because they live in California. And then there are all the students scattered across the country at different colleges.

It’s always hard to coordinate plans, especially when the holidays roll around. We try to visit everyone, but with only two weeks to fit is all in, it’s very hard to synchronize schedules. It gets very stressful for everyone involved.

It would be nice if, just for one holiday season, everyone could be together without having to worry about any other plans or engagements. Even if it was only for a few days, I think it would be worth it for everyone. People could catch up with relatives they haven’t had a chance to talk with for a while, or even share life stories with people they’ve never met.

If my family had the gift of togetherness, I think it would bring everyone closer, take a lot of stress off everyone’s shoulders, help everyone enjoy the holiday season and remember what it’s really about.
