Sonya A. Crawshaw, of Hanover Park and Hoffman Estates. A Remembrance Celebration will be held at the Hanover Park Municipal Complex, 2121 W. Lake St., 3 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005. Sonya passed peacefully in her home on the 19th of December. Sonya and her husband moved to Hanover Park in 1964. She is survived by her parents, Walt and Marie Hansen of King, WI; her husband, Barry; children, Victoria and Kenneth; and her brother, David Hansen. Sonya was elected Hanover Park Village Clerk in 1973 and served in that position for 12 years. In 1985 she was elected Village President and served until retiring in 1997. She served as 1988-89 President of the DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference; 1991-92 President of the Northwest Municipal Conference; and from 1988 to 1997 she was a Board Member of the Illinois Municipal League. Sonya lobbied for and influenced decisions to construct the ElginO’Hare Expressway and the connection of Barrington Road and County Farm Road. Other accomplishments included bringing two major business parks to Hanover Park; two branch libraries; and the Westview Shopping Center, which received national recognition for construction on land thought to be undevelopable. Her charitable work included chairing several local American Cancer Society campaigns and Chicago Lung Association events. She was a frequent elementary school volunteer and was a Volunteer Tutor for the “Read to Learn” adult literacy program in Schaumburg Township. Sonya received numerous awards for civic participation including, from the White House, the President’s 2005 Volunteer Service Award. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that new unwrapped toys be brought to the Remembrance Celebration or a donation be made to the American Cancer Society. The toys will be for the Hanover Park Lions Club Holiday Toy Drive which Sonya coordinated for many years.
