When the government stuck its nose into the “marriage process” by offering tax breaks for a religious ceremony and requiring the signature of a public official, marriage became a legal agreement. (“With marriage, at least offer me a choice,” Jan. 5 column by Jason Steele)

All consenting adults who pay taxes, are eligible to vote and/or are eligible for a military draft should be allowed to enter into any legal agreement they choose. Separation of church and state.
