If Willie Nile wants to escape unfavorable comparisons to Bob Dylan, he should probably avoid having the most prominent guests on his first album in six years be Dylan’s son Jakob, of Wallflowers fame, and Larry Campbell, late of Dylan’s touring band. Those issues and the plainly Dylanesque “Game of Fools” aside, “Streets of New York” resounds with clean, expansive rock tunes such as “Cell Phones Ringing (In the Pockets of the Dead),” and Eddy Grant’s “Police on My Back” (done a la the Clash).
