I LOVE …
… restaurants that have gluten-free menus. Restaurants are usually an unnecessary challenge for people on special diets, so I truly appreciate the effort that goes into accommodating the gluten-free crowd. Thank you Wildfire, P.F. Chang’s, Da Luciano and all those others who understand what customer service is about.

… the to-die-for eggplant parmigiano at Tufano’s Vernon Park Tap restaurant (1073 W. Vernon Park Pl., 312-733-3393).
— Michael Polelle, Aurora
… supreme thin-crust pizza at Costco. Yes, Costco. As an East Coast transplant, I believe that anything beats pan pizza, which sits in your stomach like uranium and after all was not invented by an Italian, but a Texan (costco.com).

… Chicago’s bike shops. They have all the varied character and personality that the local record stores used to have.

I HATE …
… any Chicagoland hostess who gives you “attitude” when you call for a restaurant reservation–and they tell you, you can come at 4:45 p.m. or 10:30 p.m.
— Wendi Zmuda, Glen Ellyn
… the service and food at Hooters (O’Hare). The food and portions are poor at best. And, I’ve had faster and friendlier service at the post office.
— Walter Brzeski, Chicago
… “suggested donation” signs and their henchmen at summer street fairs.
— Wendy Donahue, editor
… morons who sit behind the plate (in very expensive seats, by the way) at baseball games with cell-phones in their ears and wave constantly at their similarly moronic friends watching them on TV instead of actually paying attention to the game.
