Congratulations and best wishes to all the 2006 graduates. I’d like to tell graduates that it takes hard work and many sacrifices to attain success. But please know that success is so much more than the amount of money in your pocketbook. In today’s culture, unfortunately, money and material possessions have become the standard for measuring success. But seeking only these things is never the real path to happiness or the true accounting of a person’s life. Personal success should never compromise your character and moral integrity, and life should and must have a purpose greater than yourself.
This includes not losing sight of one’s civic responsibilities, and becoming an aware, active and responsible citizen. Too many people have become jaded to their community at large, disregarding any social or moral responsibility and feeling entitled without any real effort or input in the process.
Most important, do not forego your friends and family, and always cherish the ones you love. Keep them close always. I would hope each graduate keeps his or her sights set high, and remains a faithful, responsible and compassionate human being.
Rather than looking for success, strive for greatness.
