This letter is in response to “Sox enemies” (Voice of the people, May 27), by Tim Folliard of Oak Lawn, a Sox fan who trashed the Cubs and their fans in his letter to the editor. Folliard said that Cubdom is composed of “scoundrels” and “yuppie degenerates” “wearing white Keds,” “drinking wine” and so on. You get the picture. For his information, these people account for some of the 3.2 million fans per year, year in and year out, who spend big bucks on tickets, which generate a lot of admission taxes for the City of Chicago and Cook County. They also spend money in bars, restaurants, hotels and parking facilities, as well as on fines for parking, towing services and others.

Wrigley Field is the economic engine and cash cow for the whole area. It provides employment for hundreds, generating even more income for the city, to say nothing of real estate taxes.

Now just what does the “Cell” do for generating income for the city? How much money from restaurants goes toward paying a share of city services because of the White Sox?

The bottom line is, Sox fans are living in taxpayer paradise, a gift from Cubs fans. Sox fans should look northward and thank God for the Cubs.

Folliard says that he is part of the “White Sox Nation.” I think that “region” would be a better word. The White Sox do not have any national appeal.

What is all comes down to is that 50 miles outside of the South Side of Chicago, the baseball world doesn’t know the Sox exist.
