Former Schurz state champion Terry McCann, an Olympic gold medalist in freestyle wrestling and a force in the sport for years, died at his home in Dana Point, Calif. McCann, 74, helped found a new national governing body for the sport–known originally as the U.S. Wrestling Federation, and later as USA Wrestling–and was credited with aiding the United States’ increasing international involvement with the sport. McCann won his gold medal in the 1960 Rome Olympics . He was diagnosed last year with mesothelioma, a rare cancer linked to asbestos exposure.
