Michelle Wie could have made it much easier on herself by making that birdie on 18 and then winning the playoff in the McDonald’s LPGA Championship. Instead, she made a bogey, opening the door to all those critics who contend she still has to learn how to win.
That logic is about as flawed as using a driver out of a greenside bunker.
People seem to forget that we’re talking about a 16-year-old girl here. Instead of criticizing her, we all should marvel at how remarkable it is that a high school kid nearly won the LPGA’s first two majors of the season. There’s never been anything like her in golf, and that includes Tiger Woods, who didn’t win his first pro tournament until he was 20.
Wie already knows how to win. You don’t nearly earn a spot in the men’s U.S. Open and contend in a major in the same week if you’re not the complete package.
Wie is the most compelling story in the game, this side of Woods and Phil Mickelson. We all are going to watch her win plenty of tournaments. And it is going to happen sooner rather than later.
