NEW BOOK
“Sink Or Swim: New Job. New Boss. 12 Weeks to Get It Right,” by Milo Sindell and Thuy Sindell, Adams Media, $14.95
The authors provide readers with “user instructions” crafted around five sink-or-swim skills. If you don’t master these interrelated skills, you won’t be able to execute the 12-week strategy effectively.
Setting goals is the first step. You also need to manage your time, be a sponge in learning the culture and routine, and be a team player. And you have to develop a strong personal brand that says you’re a person who can be counted on to get things done.

NEW BOOK
“Whatever You Think, Think The Opposite,” by Paul Arden, Portfolio, $13.95
Outlandish? Yes. Irreverent? Definitely. You can read this book in an hour, but don’t. Read and reread pages 1-21 and really think about how to apply their unconventional wisdom.
Once you’ve figured out a few ways to expand your comfort zone, read a few more pages and do the same. By the time you finish the book, you’ll find that your comfort zone has grown, and your opportunities with it.
Some unconventional wisdom: “We try to make sensible decisions with the facts in front of us. The problem with sensible decisions is that so is everyone else.”
“Un-sensible” decisions stand out. It’s about having the confidence to roll the dice: think iPod and iTunes.
“Having too many ideas is not always a good thing.” Too many fragments focus; you shift from idea to idea before giving any idea an opportunity to develop.”
