With its co-ed vocals, gauzy guitars, carefully considered piano chords and cavernous bass lines, this Brooklyn quintet could subsist solely on a steady diet of lilting, atmospheric ballads. Indeed, the trembling textures of “Always Looking,” “Lake Effect” and “Fake Lakes” are worth swooning over with their echoes of lost U.K. mood merchants Slowdive. But the key to the band is a propulsive rhythm section that turns “Car No Driver,” “Marfa Lights,” “No Radio” and “Monument” into blurred, blissed-out melodies; the effect is akin to hearing a great song rush past from the window of a passing subway train.
