A June 30 editorial asked, “Will the prospect of being embarrassed on TV convince more taggers to quit?” In another day and time, when public shaming in the eyes of the community was considered a viable approach to fighting crime, yes, this might have worked. In these days, however, when so many violations against the whole community are confused with exercising one’s personal rights, I don’t think so.

Too many think that any appearance on TV, regardless of circumstance or context, confers star or diva quality. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that this approach actually increases graffiti-tagging crime in the city.
