Southern Illinois University was ordered Monday to officially recognize a Christian student group that excludes membership to those who practice or support homosexuality. Officials revoked the organization’s official status in March 2005, arguing that the group’s membership policy violates the university’s non-discrimination policies because it prohibits gay and lesbian students from joining.
Taste’ mom charged
Marie Campbell was alone in Bond Court on Monday as a judge read the charge against her: child endangerment. Campbell told investigators that she lost sight of her son after taking him to the Taste of Chicago festival June 30, said Assistant State’s Atty. Erin Antonietti. Child-welfare workers said Monday evening that they planned to place the boy, now a ward of state, with a relative.
Peoples Gas purchased
WPS Resources Corp., the Wisconsin utility company buying Peoples Energy Corp. for about $1.5 billion in stock, said it will move the merged company’s headquarters to Chicago from Green Bay and will not immediately seek higher rates for natural gas from its Illinois customers. The combined company will employ more than 5,000 and provide electricity and gas to more than 2.1 million customers in four states.
Father charged with murder
The father of a 3-month-old boy was charged Monday in the death of his son, one day after the infant succumbed to head injuries he received last month, authorities said. Anthony Cook, 36, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of infant Anthony Cook. He had been charged June 24 with aggravated battery against his son, but the charges were upgraded Monday, police said.
