The party line is that the 15-year-old prodigy’s debut is a mature piece of work. And that’s true; whether it makes “The Day Has Come” innately superior to Kelly Clarkson or the proverbial cast of thousands is a tougher question. Advanced it may be–the sultry vocal and honky-tonk piano of “One Original Thing,” to cite just one example, remove the album from kid-schlock territory. Yet it remains, essentially, teen pop. If you’re voting for “Most Likely To Succeed,” Kimball seems the obvious choice among her peers. But her day hasn’t come quite yet.
