Apparently Mojave 3 have tired of the moody, country-tinged sound they’ve mined for the last decade. With its chiming guitars, echo-laden vocal harmonies, and rollicking organ licks, “Puzzles Like You” sounds more like a tribute to ’80s Antipodean pop groups such as the Chills and the Go-Betweens. But that comparison falls apart if you listen closely; where those bands evoked an otherworldly sense of wonder or a skewed, intelligent take on romantic assignations, Mojave 3 singer Neil Halstead offers pallid sentimentality. This record is strictly for background listening.
